Easyjet in in-flight Holocaust gaffe shame

By Oliver Farrimond

EASYJET have been forced into an embarrassing apology after printing a Holocaust gaffe in their in-flight magazine.

The budget airline published racy photographs of models posing in the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin – without permission from the memorial’s owners.

The saucy shoot sees models in sultry poses leaning against sculptures erected as a memorial to the genocidal massacre of the Jews in the Second World War.

The red-faced airline have now pulled the magazines from their flights after being contacted by the left-wing magazine The New Statesman this morning (Friday).

An Easyjet spokesperson said: “EasyJet profusely apologises to anyone who may be offended by the inappropriate fashion photo shoot at the Holocost Memorial in Berlin featured in this month’s issue of the in-flight magazine.

“The magazine is produced by INK, an external publishing house, and EasyJet were not aware of the images until they appeared in print.

“As a consequence we are now reviewing our relationship with the publisher and are withdrawing this month’s issue from all flights.” Continue reading

X-Factor fans vote Dannii Minogue a cut above Cheryl Cole

by SHAUN MILNE

CHERYL Cole may be blushing at her chart success as she readies for a crack at the US market under the watchful eye of hip-hop star Jay-Z.

But it seems fellow X-Factor judge Dannii Minogue is the winner in the fashion stakes as far as Scots fans of the show are concerned at least, as they flock to stylists desperate to copy the Australian beauty’s look instead.

JUST THE BOB: Sadie Jean Sloss

Cheryl has been the one grabbing all the headlines after her album ‘3 Words’ smashed into the charts at number one helped by her own performances on the hit show.

BOUTIQUE

Yet according to the fashion experts, it’s Dannii’s 1920’s style bob haircut which is keeping the nation’s crimpers busier than usual.

Former celebrity make-up artist Sadie Jean Sloss, who is based in Edinburgh, said Dannii has sparked the busiest period at her DollyLeo boutique since she first launched her business more than a year ago.

And she says it’s all about Dannii as staff are left to work double time to cope with demand. Continue reading

Scots teenager dies after horror road smash

Jack Chan and Emily ChanBy Alexander Lawrie

A PROMISING teenage student has lost her fight for life just days after her beloved boyfriend was killed in the same horror car smash.

Emily Chan, 18, was a passenger in her boyfriend’s car when it left the road during a thunder storm and smashed head-on into a tree on Edinburgh’s Frogston Road West on Tuesday night at around 9.45pm.

The devoted couple were rushed to Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary but the driver of the blue Mazda, Zak Ji Chan, 18, died in hospital just a couple of hours after arriving.

Miss Chan, who sustained serious head injuries, was transferred to the city’s Western General Hospital for specialist treatment but sadly died yesterday. (Fri)

The talented student had just begun her second year at Heriot Watt University studying fashion at the School of Textiles and Design in Galashiels.

Mr Chan, known to his friends as Jack, was studying Information and Technology at Edinburgh’s Napier University and was hoping to transfer to the Borders-based university to be nearer his sweetheart.

And just hours after Mr Chan passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning his family were seen setting up a makeshift shrine which included photographs, teddy bears and family mementoes at the crash scene.

Burns Rug

By Domenica Goduto

A new tartan has been created to honour the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth.

The patterns will feature colours that represent his most famous poems, and it is hoped that money from the special tartan will go towards a museum to celebrate his life.

The luxury Scottish fashion brand Johnstons of Elgin has designed a limited edition range featuring the new Anniversary Check pattern.

The collection includes two scarves and a travel rug made from lambs wool and cashmere, with one pound from the sale of each item going towards the building of the National Trust’s Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway. Continue reading

Models strut their stuff at launch of Edinburgh College of Art fashion show

By Oliver Farrimond

EDINBURGH fashion students showcased their years work yesterday in a glamorous fashion show at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Hundreds gathered to watch the event, which featured professional models strutting their stuff in a variety of luxurious fabrics and elaborate costumes.

The show represents the culmination of a year’s hard work for many students, and for some it is the final show of their degree.

Many will hope to go on to a successful career in one of the fashion industry’s “big four” cities of Milan, London, Paris and New York City.

The show runs from Wednesday 6th May until the 9th, and is widely regarded as a key date in the Capital’s cultural calendar.

Among the collections was an exclusive range of Scottish fabrics from the Borders-based Lochcarron of Scotland. Continue reading

Talent star Susan Boyle suffers wardrobe malfunction

By Cara Sulieman

SUSAN Boyle suffered an embarrassing ‘wardrobe malfunction’ early today at her home in Blackburn.

The Britain’s Got Talent star made a rookie mistake of forgetting to zip herself up before leaving her house in Blackburn.

SUSAN BOYLE: wardobe malfunction

Stepping out in her cream chinos and now famous black leather jacket, she seemed oblivious of her fashion faux pas.

And it didn’t stop there – squeezed into a black satin shirt a few sizes too small, the substantial singer was bursting out between the buttons as she faced photographers camped outside her home.

Oprah

The dressing disaster comes just weeks after singing sensation Susan underwent a controversial makeover after shooting to fame last month, and just 24-hrs after she was filmed for the Oprah Winfrey show.

She ditched the frumpy clothes, waxed her eyebrows and died her hair during a whirlwind of media interviews.

But if her performance yesterday (Weds) proves anything then it’s proof that the old Susan is still alive and well – if maybe in need of a little help with her choice of outfits before her next big performance.

Models show off designer threads in Edinburgh’s Harvey Nicks

By Oliver Farrimond and Rebecca Jamieson

SCOTLAND’S hottest young fashion designers saw their work go on display yesterday at Edinburgh’s boutique Harvey Nichols store.

In a preview for the Edinburgh College of Art’s annual fashion show, models strutted their stuff down the aisles showing off the collections of the College’s graduating students.

Inspiration for the outfits on show range from British youth culture to the Victorian circus – and dreary April showers did not prevent the models from taking to the streets to show off their threads.

Malcolm Burkinshaw, head of fashion at ECA, said: “This is an exciting opportunity not only for our students, but for anyone who wants to see what’s new this season.

“We treat our students as innovators – their ideas are very original and I think that sets them apart from the crowd.

“Edinburgh College of Art graduates are thought of as very high calibre, and many go on to have successful careers both in Scotland and elsewhere.”

Malcolm, 34, added: “Fashion is everywhere – not just in our clothes.

“It’s hugely important as a statement of who we are, and that’s who our students are designing for.”

Four professional models were on hand to parade the outfits, which belong to a collection going on show at the Edinburgh College of Art fashion show in May.

The fashion show runs from Wednesday 6th May until the 9th, and is widely regarded as an un-missable date in the Capital’s cultural calendar.

Fashion student Sarah Martin, 21, said that she was proud to see her work go on display.

She said: “The fashion show is a great opportunity for us to show what we’ve been working on all year.

“It may be surprising to hear but all the fashion students are close friends, and it’s going to be very exciting to see everyone’s finished collections.”
