Justice Scales New Heights As Thief Gets To Repay Cash

By Paul Thornton

A THIEF who stole over £10,000 from the firm he worked for has been given a chance to repay the cash – after landing a job scaling buildings.

Photobooth worker Colin Smith, 35, worked for Snap Digital Imaging and travelled around Scotland collecting the takings from the passport picture booths.

But instead of banking the coins Smith pocketed the money and used the cash to pay off bills and mortgage payments.

His scam was uncovered after a company audit confirmed the cash was missing and Smith was arrested.

The 24-year-old ignored a red light in the capital’s London Road in July 2008, before his move to Doncaster Rovers during the January transfer window.

He initially denied passing the red light as he thought his blonde girlfriend might have been driving the car.

He was fined £160, with his defence agent saying he “certainly has earnings” to pay it.

Shiels claimed he had “no particular recollection” of passing the traffic light on London Road, close to Hibs’ Easter Road stadium.

Hungarian goalkeeper David Groff, 20, lost his £30,000 per-year contract with the SPL side earlier this year after failing to make an impact.

He had featured on the fringes of the first team during his three year spell at Easter Road, but was released into unemployment in March.

A few weeks later police found him slumped drunk at the wheel of his Audi A3 in an Asda car park close to the Easter Road stadium where he played in front of thousands of fans.

Police said Groff and a friend were sleeping in the car with the engine running.
