John Lewis fined for putting construction workers at risk

HIGH street retailer John Lewis has been fined £20,000 for failing to carry out proper safety checks while refurbishing premises in Edinburgh which led to 15 construction workers potentially being exposed to asbestos.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard how some of the men were told to carry on touching dangerous areas with their own hands even after the alarm had been raised.

If asbestos is disturbed it can release harmful fibres into the air, which can lead to diseases such as cancer, lung scarring and serious respiratory problems.

However, the effects of the illness may not become apparent until up to 40 years later. Continue reading

Drug addict steals from own mother to fund habit

A DESPERATE drug addict who stole from his own mother in order to fund his habit apologised to police when they caught him.

Colin Brown, 31, went round to his mum Patricia Brown’s home in the Duddingston area of Edinburgh three days in a row and stole jewellery, a games console and games which he sold on for a total of £368.50.

The court heard that Brown started taking heroin in February and sold the items on at Cash Generator to fund his habit.

Today at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, he pled guilty to four counts of theft between September 29 and October 1 this year.

Thug launches “gratuitous” attack on man he thought had groped him

A THUG  launched a “gratuitous” attack on another man because he thought he had been groped by his victim earlier in the evening.

Stephen De Veres, 23, was on his way home from drinking with a friend when he spotted Tony Singh walking in front of him.

Thinking he was the same person who had grabbed his bottom in a club earlier that night, De Veres started shouting homophobic names at Mr Singh before following him up an alleyway and attacking him.

Today at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, De Veres pled guilty to assaulting Mr Singh to his injury during the incident on July 23 this year.

Edinburgh based soldier asked girls for pix in their underwear

A SCOTS based soldier asked teenage girls to send him pictures of themselves in their underwear and kept more than 500 indecent images of children on his computer.

Corporal Gavin Booth, 30, based at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh with 3 Rifles, admitted possessing and distributing images of children, sending text messages to teenage girls which were both “sexual and lewd” in nature and contacting underage girls online.

Booth pled guilty to four charges which happened between June 2007 and August 2009, but pled not guilty to a charge of making his own indecent images.

Today (Tue) Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard how his wife had logged onto his laptop while he was away on a camping trip, and found emails confirming friend requests he had sent to girls aged between 14 and 19 on the social networking site Facebook. Continue reading

HIGH street retailer John Lewis faces a massive fine after it was revealed they failed to do proper safety checks while refurbishing premises in Edinburgh which led to 15 construction workers potentially being exposed to asbestos.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard today (Mon) that some of the men were told to carry on touching danger areas with their own hands even after the alarm had been raised because no proper tests were done.

If asbestos is disturbed it can release harmful fibres into the air, which may lead to diseases such as cancer, lung scarring and serious respiratory problems.

The effects of the illness may not become apparent until up to 40 years later.

Edinburgh University student was child porn thrill seeker

A STUDENT who was caught with more than 1,000 sick images of underage girls and initially denied having the porn has been spared jail.

Jonathan Wright, 19, finally admitted to police he had downloaded them for the “thrill” when he was arrested in November last year.

The Edinburgh University student told officers that he had downloaded the sick pictures to “see if they were real”.

And today (fri) at Edinburgh Sheriff Court the Geology student was sentenced to three years probation and 200 hours community service for possession of the images between August 26 and November 17 last year.

The court heard that the teenager downloaded the vile images after a “relationship break down”.

Defence agent Colm Dempsey said: “He experienced a traumatic relationship break down and then he engaged looking at adult pornography which deteriated into looking at these images. Continue reading

Schoolboy flashed women before pulling down their leggings

A SICK schoolboy flashed at two women in their 20s – before trying to pull down one of their leggings.

Mohammad Sohaib, 16, started following the girls as they walked down Gordon Street in Edinburgh before grabbing one of them on the bum and asking her “why do people not like to have sex in this country?”

The teenager then exposed himself to both women before trying to pull down the leggings of the other girl.

Today at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Sohaib pled guilty to two charges of assault and one of public indecency on February 15 this year.
