Battle of Prestonpans re-enactment all set to go

MUSKETS and cannons were at the ready yesterday (tues) ahead of this year’s re-enactment of the Battle of Prestonpans.

Organisers predict large crowds for the event stretching over two days this weekend with more than 150 participants taking part in mock fighting.

The re-enactments have become an annual event to celebrate the anniversary of the famous battle which took place on 21 September 1745. 

It saw Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army of Jacobite Highlanders resoundingly beat the government troops led by Sir John Cope. Continue reading

Scottish volunteers preview world’s longest tapestry

THE world’s longest tapestry was unveiled today at a private preview for the 200 Scottish volunteers who helped create it.

Stitchers from all over the country arrived to see their panels of work finally combined, together telling the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s early campaign.

It measures 104 metres and consists of more than 10 million stitches, taking the embroiderers almost 18 months to finish.

Debuted in Prestonpans, East Lothian – where the historical story is set – the tapestry will now go on tour around Scotland starting in Eriskay next weekend, before coming home to Prestonpans in September.
