BRITAIN’S oldest person has died just a few weeks away from her 112th birthday.

Annie Turnbull passed away at her care home in Leith last Friday, leaving a large family and even larger legacy.

When asked, the great-grandmother would say that “keeping calm” was the secret to her longevity.

But she didn’t like the attention her long life brought her, and was reluctant to be put in the spotlight.

Blue lights nabbed after paramedic’s vehicle is broken into

A VOLUNTEER paramedic who had his emergency response vehicle broken into and around a thousand pounds worth of equipment stolen says he feels “violated.”

Andrew Kerr, 35, from Broxburn, West Lothian, was visiting a friend in Edinburgh when the window of his 4×4 Honda CRV was smashed and raided on Brunswick Road in Leith.

The thief then took off with his blue flashing lights and time saving SatNav system, while also causing damage to the vehicle.

It meant Mr Kerr, who gives up around 12 hours of his time per week, was off the road for seven days, unable to answer emergency calls. Continue reading

Royal Navy Fleet A&E ship takes break in Edinburgh after refit

ONE of the Royal Navy Fleet’s most important ‘floating hospital’ ships has docked in Scotland’s capital, allowing its crew to soak up the festival atmosphere.

Royal Fleet Auxiliary Argus – fondly nicknamed ‘BUPA Baghdad’ – acts as an accident and emergency unit for troops deployed to conflict zones all over the world.

Irvine Welsh gives fans a chance to be in new novel

HIS previous characters became immortal with the names Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie still famous the world over.

Now Scots author Irvine Welsh is preparing to give fans the chance to join them by naming one of his new characters from his forthcoming prequel to hit novel Trainspotting after them.

The original book, which one critic said “deserves to sell more copies than the Bible”, helped launch the careers of actors Robert Carlyle, Ewan McGregor, Kelly MacDonald and Johnny Lee Miller when the film adaptation came out.

Skagboys is due to hit shelves in April 2012 and goes back into the past of the now-famous heroin addicts in Leith.

Police appeal for witnesses after Edinburgh muggings

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two women were robbed in separate incidents in Edinburgh.

A masked mugger brandished a knife at a 23 year-old woman after sneaking up on her from behind her early this morning.

The terrified student threw her handbag at the attacker, who then fled from Stead’s Place near Leith Walk.

Motorbike crash lands driver in hospital with head injuries

A MAN was taken to hospital with suspected head injuries after his motor bike struck a van in heavy rain.

The 30-year-old motorcyclist collided with the van shortly before 4pm today in the Leith area of Edinburgh and was taken by ambulance to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Links Gardens where the accident happened remained closed while police officers attended the scene, where a helmet could be seen lying on the road next to the dented van.

The extent of the man’s injuries was not yet known, but the accident left what appeared to be the impression of his body crushed into the side of the white coloured van. Continue reading

No Knives Better Lives initiative arrives in Edinburgh

TEENAGERS will be the focus of a ‘No Knives’ campaign being launched in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Lothian and Borders Police and City of Edinburgh Council plan to work with youngsters throughout the summer to tackle knife crime.

They are focusing on the North of the city which accounts for a third of all knife crime in the Capital.

To kick off the No Knives Better Lives campaign, local teenagers from Leith will play a five-a-side football tournament in Montgomery Park.

They will then meet Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to talk about the new initiative. Continue reading

Rugby player brings happy ending for new bride

A NEWLYWED who had waved goodbye to her wedding ring forever after losing it during a snowball fight has had it returned to her after a string of lucky events.

Minpreet Jongkees lost her sparkler during a romantic Christmas Day snowball fight on the Meadows with her husband Arjan.

And after two days of scouring the huge area in Edinburgh with metal detecting enthusiasts, she had given up all hope of seeing the special ring again.

But restaurant worker Matthew Gilgore literally stumbled on the band when he was rugby tackled to the ground during a sunny day out.

Man appears in court over alleged attempted rape

A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded over the alleged attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Kevin Mathers, 22, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Mon) over an alleged sexual attack on a girl at the Crewe Toll area of the city on Wednesday (June 30).

Mathers, from the Leith area of Edinburgh, also appeared on two charges of sexually aggravated breach of the peace.

During a brief appearance from custody on petition before Sheriff Frank Crowe he made no plea and no declaration and bail was refused.

Cyclist doesn’t know if she was hit or fell

A CYCLIST has been left with such horrific injuries after a suspected hit and run that she has no idea what happened.

The 27 year-old woman fractured her collar bone and damaged her head after the crash.

Last night she was stable in hospital but police issued an appeal for witnesses in a bid to find out whether she was hit or fell off her bike.

She was cycling along Edinburgh’s Easter Road just before 8.30am on Tuesday morning and is thought to have been struck by a car turning on to Dalmeny Street.
