Police hunting pair caught on CCTV in connection with Bannatyne’s shooting

POLICE probing the shooting of a man outside an Edinburgh health club have revealed they are looking for two suspects in connection with the attack.

Robert Kelbie, 27, a well known property developer in the city, was gunned down outside Bannatyne’s Health Club on Wednesday, 20 October.

He managed to run into the club in Newcraighall and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before discharging himself the same evening.

A silver Vauxhall Vectra car was reportedly seen speeding away from the scene moments later, and police believe they recovered it the following morning in a private car park off West Bryson Road. Continue reading

Shooting pub to become supermarket in bid to drop stigma

A PUB where a former boxing champion was gunned down and killed is to become a supermarket.

In 2006, 31-year-old Alex McKinnon was shot by Jamie Bain at The Marmion in Gracemount, Edinburgh.

Bain then turned the gun on Mr McKinnon’s brother-in-law, James Hendry, who was left badly wounded after the attack.

Since then, the pub has struggled to recover from the stigma attached to the shooting, and owners Punch Taverns have decided to convert it to a supermarket. Continue reading

Police reconstruct moment man was shot in health club car park

POLICE have reconstructed the moment when a man was shot outside a health club in Edinburgh last week in a bid to jog gym-goers memories.

Robert Kelbie, 27, a property developer, was shot and wounded outside Bannatyne’s Health Club in Newcraighall during one of its busiest periods as he walked through the car park.

Last night – exactly one week on from the attack – officers from the Lothian and Borders force stopped drivers in the car park, hoping to trace the owner of silver or grey Vauxhall Vectra.

A SCOTS property tycoon facing multiple charges of fraud and money laundering has been gunned down outside a busy Scots health club in front of dozens of stunned gym members.

Robert Kelbie, 27, a property developer, was shot and wounded outside Bannatyne’s Health Club at Newcraighall in Edinburgh during one of its busiest periods as he walked through the car park.

He was initially treated at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after Wednesday’s team-time shooting which happened between 6pm and 7pm, but police said he later discharged himself.

The ex-boxer who dated former Miss Scotland, Lois Weatherup, 27, was facing five fraud charges, three for money laundering, attempted fraud and accused of being involved in a fraudulent scheme.

He is still to face trial.

Lothian and Border Police were unable to comment on any potential motives or suspects in the potential hit, but confirmed the target was being treated as a victim of crime in relation to the shooting. Continue reading

Nurse’s hostage nightmare in her own bedroom

A SCOTTISH nurse was held hostage in her own bedroom for four hours after waking up to find a disturbed knifeman in her room.

Nightnurse Mary Johnston, 51 was barricaded inside her house by intruder Rafal Swiderski, 20, threatening to kill himself.

The terrified nurse managed to send a text message reading “HELP. PHONE POLICE” to a friend and tried to talk the raider out of using the knife.

She escaped after four hours, sneaking out the bedroom door while Swiderski was looking out the window at awaiting police.

Demarco shot in head “over son’s £1m gambling debt”

A BUSINESSMAN was gunned down on the steps of a casino over the £1m plus gambling debts of his high-flying financier son, a court has heard.

Tony Demarco, 64, was blasted in the back of the head as he stood on the steps of the Gala Maybury Casino in Edinburgh on June 3, 2008.

Four men have been jailed over the attempted slaying but the motive behind the hit has remained a mystery.

But today (Tuesday) a court was told the attack came in retribution for the unpaid debts of Mr Demarco’s son, Antony, to loan sharks covering his gambling losses.

The revelations about the motive behind the notorious attack came as Antony admitted a £1m fraud against two companies.

Bullet Found After “Warning Shot” At House

A BULLET recovered by police at the scene of a drive by shooting could hold vital clues in tracking down who was behind the incident.

Detectives are probing the shot fired at an address in Dalkeith, Midlothian, at around 11.25pm on Wednesday.

Damage caused by the bullet could be seen at the home of George Rae, 39, who police sources say was also the target of recent threats made at the start of the month.

The blast left his neighbours in Woodburn Avenue shocked, with many last night saying a feud had been bubbling under for some time.
