Holiday ruined after mum dies of long-term kidney condition

THE funeral of a mum who died tragically on a family holiday is to be held tomorrow (Fri), in her hometown of Dunfermline.

Karen McArthur, 40, passed away a day into her Corfu holiday, after battling severe kidney problems for her whole life.

The day she died was coincidentally 20 years to the day since meeting her husband Gordon, with whom she had seven-year-old Adam and helped to raise Marie, 27, Gordon’s daughter from a previous relationship.

Karen’s dad, Alex Anderson, said: “She had had this period in hospital and felt they all needed a break and that it would do them all good.

Sex criminal blames gay “repression” after grooming kids

AN old-age pervert who groomed two boys by plying them with alcohol then sexually abusing them has been jailed for eight months.

Joseph Johnstone, 67, claimed that growing up in a time when homosexuality was frowned upon skewed his understanding of normal behaviour.

He snared two 15 year-old boys by inviting them into his home for tea and biscuits in May last year.

THE heartbroken sister of tragic soldier Christopher O’Kane paid a touching tribute to her brother today.

Krystyle O’Kane wrote a poem for her 26-year-old brother who died from the head injuries he suffered after falling during a pedicab ride in Edinburgh at the weekend.

And she revealed that their mother, Helen O’Kane, also died in a road accident 16 years ago.

Concern grows for missing Musselburgh mum

MOUNTED police patrols today joined the hunt for a missing Scots mum as fears grew for her safety after she disappeared from her home early on Monday morning.

Elizabeth McVey, from Musselburgh, has not been seen since she vanished from her home in the East Lothian town’s Eskview Road.

The last time anyone from her family saw the keen churchgoer was around 12.30am at her home before she was reported missing by relatives seven hours later.

She is registered as living at the house with husband Michael, and grown up children, son Mark and daughter Lynsey.

Mum escapes punishment after putting hash before her kids

A SHAMED Scots mum who neglected her four “street urchin” children while immaculate cannabis plants grew in her home walked free from court today (Thurs).

The four children – aged between 10 and seven – were forced to live in squalor while their father grew tended cannabis plants in a cupboard in their grubby Edinburgh home.

The youngsters were discovered sleeping on the floor covered by dirty bed sheets.

When police entered the filthy flat, they called in social workers who immediately took the neglected kids into care.

Their faces were so dirty that police said they resembled “street urchins.”

Meanwhile a dozen cannabis plants – hand-reared from seed – enjoyed daily watering and plush conditions to grow hash for their 36 year-old father.

The illegal plants had fans and heat lights to keep them at their optimum temperature for growing.

Pregnant 17 year old Borders girl dies from Swine Flu virus

PREGNANT women across Scotland were urged to get vaccinated against the swine flu virus last night after a 17-year-old mum-to-be became its latest victim.

In a statement issued just before 1pm, the Scottish Government confirmed that the teenage girl – who was identified only as being from the Borders area – had been suffering from the H1N1 virus and died within the past 24-hours.

No further details were issued officially, but it was understood a report had gone to the Procurator Fiscal charged with investigating all sudden deaths in the area.

She was the 15th person in Scotland to die from the virus. NHS Borders

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon  broke off from the SNP’s annual gathering at Inverness to plead with all expectant women to seek help confirming that they are among those most at risk.

With the first supplies of the vaccine due to be issued later this month, she said they would be prioritised because of their conditions. Continue reading

A SCOTTISH midwife who became a surprise best-selling author with her first cookbook is about to publish the THIRD edition – with a little help from her celebrity friends.

Linda McDonald, 49, has already raised £270,000 for a hospital in Malawi through the sale of two cookbooks, and two calendars.

And for her third and final book she has drafted in the help of Big Brother host Davina McCall, Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown and former First Minister Jack McConnell.

What started as a conversation on the night shift at Simpson’s Maternity Unit in Edinburgh four years ago has turned into a charity that has attracted the attention of politicians and celebrities across the country.
