By Cara Sulieman

AN ELDERLY man has appeared in court charged with touching up two young girls over a five year period.

William Tarrel, 77, pled not guilty to two charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour towards the two underage girls at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

He is accused of touching the private parts of one child over her clothing on two occasions between November 2001 and November 2006.

She was aged between just four and nine years old at the time of the alleged incidents.

Tarrel is also charged with stripping the other girl before touching her private parts and asking her to touch his on various occasions between May 2003 and November 2006.

She was aged between seven and 10 at the time.

The girls cannot be named for legal reasons.

Tarrel’s defence agent, Matthew Auchincloss, told the court that his client had an “horrendous” infection, the treatment for which gave him fits of temporary delusion and asked that the trial be postponed.

Sheriff Derrick MacIntyre agreed and Tarrel will go on trial in December after undergoing medical assessment.

And the number is likely to be far higher than that because most Scots police forces fail to keep records discriminating between child and adult victims of the most serious sex crimes such as rape or indecent assaults.

At least 1,592 offences against children were reported in 2009 – more than four a day.

The stats showed that innocent youngsters were subjected to rape, sexual assault and lewd and libidinous behaviour across the country as well as indecent exposure and adults who use their positions of trust to abuse them.

Would-be teacher exposed as pervert

By Michael MacLeod

THREE young girls were left feeling “weird and uncomfortable” after a creepy dad felt them up while they were playing computer games.

Douglas Richardson, 50, trained to be a teacher but never secured employment in education.

But he was exposed as a pervert after rubbing his hands all over the chests and thighs of the girls – who were as young as nine years old at the time.

Richardson’s seedy behaviour continued for almost two years and only came to an end when the worried children told other grown-ups and police were called in.

He insisted to police that he hadn’t done anything illegal but admitted that the charges against him “looked dodgy”.

The dad-of-one later admitted lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour but today(Thursday) was allowed to walk free from Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
