Edinburgh brides to donate wedding dresses to Africa

IT IS among the most expensive purchases a woman will ever make and spends most of its life in the cupboard.

But now 20 Scots brides have chosen to send their wedding dresses thousands of miles away to Africa – so they can have a another big day.

The women, who are from in and around Edinburgh, will send them to Uganda to give brides-to-be a special surprise when they tie the knot.

Janice Jack, from Barnton in Edinburgh, contacted the Jireh Women charity after reading about the plight of women in the war-torn country.

Holyrood protest over slashed funding for university jobs

STUDENTS and staff protested outside the Scottish Parliament yesterday over cuts that could see hundreds of university staff lose their jobs.

The group protested outside Holyrood over cuts in teacher training that will see Edinburgh University alone lose up to 40 staff.

The Scottish government’s cuts in education training will see fewer qualified primary and secondary teachers graduating over the next few years.

Edinburgh has already slashed the number of places on its primary school teacher training programme from 280 to just 60.

And the secondary school training programme is to lose two courses from its curriculum. Continue reading

Singer Susan Boyle vows to stay put after late night intruder shock

SHAKEN superstar Susan Boyle has vowed she won’t be forced to flee her family home after confronting a late night intruder in her house.

The Scots singer returned from London late on Tuesday night after recording a charity single for Haiti earthquake victims.

After opening the door of her council house in Blackburn, West Lothian, she discovered a man dressed in black roaming around inside.

He barged past her and a pal before fleeing into the night, leaving the 48-year-old distressed and shaken by the ordeal.

Susan was left unhurt, but deeply disturbed on finding that the mystery man had been in long enough to have gone through her things.

Susan Boyle Intruder Terror As Man Breaks Into House

SINGING star Susan Boyle discovered an intruder at her home in West Lothian last night – just hours after helping record a song for Haiti.

SuBo returned to her council house in Blackburn with a friend shortly before 10pm and confronted the man who was on the stairs at her home.

It was claimed the intruder then fled past SuBo and her pal. He was detained by police and later released after questioning.

Susan, 48, was said to have been left “very shocked” by the drama which comes just weeks after she had a panic alarm fitted in her home because of prowlers.


A friend told reporters: “Susan got home to find an intruder halfway up her stairs.

“She was with a female pal who was dropping her off.

“Her pal only expected to be with her for a couple of minutes, but it is just as well she was.

“Susan is unharmed, but obviously very, very shocked.

“The guy has seen her come in and bolted out straight past Susan.”
