Millions spent on fat-busting pills

THE NHS is shelling out £4 million a year on fat-busting drugs for the obese, with more than 110,000 prescriptions being written out for the pills last year.

And some of the patients are under the age of 16 – highlighting the country’s obesity problem.

Prescriptions for anti-obesity drugs have risen by almost 36,000 in four years.

Scotland expected to ban air rifles

A NEW agreement between Westminster and Holyrood could see air rifles being banned from Scotland’s streets.

Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy secured the deal, which sees the authority over the weapons being transferred to the Scottish Government.

The decision comes four years after Scots tot Andrew Morton was gunned down just yards from his Glasgow home.

His parents Sharon and Andy – who have been campaigning for the weapon ban since Andrew died – have welcomed the deal.

Fatal car crash claims two lives

TWO elderly women have died after their car crashed into a tree at the weekend.

Police and fire crews rushed to the B6369 Haddington to Gifford road in East Lothian at 5.36pm on Saturday after receiving news of the accident.

Paramedics fought to save one of the women but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Drink-driving limit to be lowered

PLANS are underway to lower the Scottish drink-driving limit to make it less than south of the border.

Pub-goers would break the law driving after two pints under new rules which would see the 80mg per 100ml of blood limit dropped to 50mg.

The new rules would restrict drinking motorists to a pint of lager or large glass of wine.

SuBo’s meteoric rise to fame

SUSAN Boyle has spoken about her meteoric rise to fame on the day that her album is released worldwide.

I Dreamed a Dream – the debut album from the 48-year-old – hits shops today (Mon) having already sold more pre-order copies than any other album on internet shopping website Amazon.

It is just another achievement for the spinster from Blackburn, West Lothian, who shot to fame after her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent in April.

And she has spoken for the first time about how it feels to get so much attention, and insists she is still “a wee wifey from Blackburn”.

New regulations to protect whisky industry

Whisky to have more protection from cheap imitations

NEW regulations come in to force tomorrow (Mon) to protect the reputation of Scottish whisky.

In an attempt to stop cheap imitations from tricking people into buying what they think is the real McCoy, rules on labelling have been stepped up.

Only whisky that has been bottled in Scotland will be allowed to carry the phrase “Scotch whisky” and it must be clear whether the water of life is a single malt or blend.

And a distillery name can only be used if the whisky was distilled there.

Man seriously injured in assualt

A MAN was left seriously injured after being attacked by a group of youths in the capital.

The group of four or five males pounced on the victim as he was walking onto London Road in the Abbeyhill area of Edinburgh.

The thugs – all aged between fifteen and sixteen years old – knocked him to the ground and injured his eye.

He later required surgery on the injury after the brutal assault.
